Designer Spotlight: The Beautifully Curated Stylings of Langsam Rubin Interiors

This month, we sat down with Carol Langsam Konigsberg of Langsam Rubin Interiors for an engaging conversation about the importance of the client-designer relationship—for both home and commercial spaces. Q & A with Carol Konigsberg

Q: We love the adaptability of your design style. From contemporary to traditional, each space you create is serene and beautiful. Is there a signature touch you use to make each one unique?

A: I think the main thing that keeps each project unique is integrating the design team’s expertise with the clients’ needs for the space. When we initially meet with a client, we want to see if we are a good fit for one another. A client-designer relationship is so important in making a home special. My favorite jobs reflect a true mix of the client’s personality and taste, mixed with the designer’s professional input.

Q: Your selection of flooring lends a beautiful balance to your designs. What are the qualities you consider when deciding on the look and type of floor for a commercial space?

A: When looking for flooring for a commercial space, we focus on finding a combination of a great look combined with durability. We understand the traffic a commercial space endures and we want it to look fresh for as long as possible.

Q: Your curation of beautiful commercial spaces is impressive. What are the standout features that make a great commercial space?

A: Distinctive flooring and specialty wall treatment—combined—make a commercial space impressive. The flooring process starts with selecting from a wide range of options such as wood, tile, and carpeting. The next important step is to plan how it will be installed in the space; different looks can be achieved with varying layouts. We also focus on entry areas as it creates the first impression. We add special finishes and details such as custom-framed mirrors to create a few ‘wow’ moments. Artwork also plays a very important role in making a job look complete.

Q: The use of window treatments is a true standout feature in your designs—especially for tall windows. How do you decide which window covering works best for a room?

A: We generally look for a novelty item, which is typically a fabric that has something different about it—such as a special pattern or yarn throughout. This is true for many of our selections. We like to pick something that most people would not think of on their own. We also use decorative details on window cornices, such a specialty trim or nailhead design.

Q: Every room in the house must be fun to design. Do you have a favorite room to unleash your creativity?

A: Designers can find inspiration in any room. Some clients may be more conservative while others let us run free to do what we love to do. We love to be creative in every space possible.

Q: The beauty of the fabrics you choose truly make a design statement. What are the best tips you can offer when deciding on patterns and textures?

A: Don’t be afraid to use a combination of fabrics and textures on a project. We love to create interest by coordinating smooth fabrics and tweeds as companions. Also, quite often we will select a standout fabric for one piece of furniture in the room.

Q: What are your top three design tips for someone who is thinking about a home refresh?

A: Do it. Do it. Do it. Remember: Rome wasn’t built in a day! Start small and the rest will follow.
