Designer Spotlight: The Classically Curated Stylings of Steven Marc Wasserman Interior Design
This month, we sat down with Steven Marc Wasserman of Steven Marc Wasserman Interior Design for an inspiring conversation about how his flair for incorporating unique touches to his designs is his niche to creating beautifully-curated spaces in homes and commercial spaces across the country. Get ready to be inspired as Steven shares his passion for valuing his clients’ budgets while bringing their design visions to life.
Q: We love how you blend classic design elements with a contemporary vibe. Is there a signature touch you use when creating this beautiful balance?
A: Combining one with the other allows me to balance the space so that your eye is drawn from one interesting element to the other. It is also a wonderful way of showcasing items that have a personal meaning to the client.
Q: The use of plants in your designs is captivating. What are some tips you can share when choosing plants that are best suited for a particular room?
A: Bringing the outdoors in is important to the “Life” of the room. I feel it softens a space and invites you in. If real plants are not viable, I will choose a high-quality faux plant to achieve that element of serenity and peace.
Q: The use of window treatments is a true standout feature in your designs. How do you decide which window covering is best for a room?
A: To me, the window treatments are the “jewelry” of the room. They are the final touch that adds sparkle and depth while giving the room a feeling of completeness.
Q: Saving your clients money and sticking to a budget is part of your core philosophy. Can you tell us some of the unique ways you make this happen?
A: Yes, valuing my client’s budget is core to my mission statement. Every client is unique. Listening carefully to their wishes is a top priority. Once I have a detailed understanding of their needs, wants and desires, I can then come up with an outline of feasible concepts to meet their budget. I have long-standing relationships with suppliers—such as Country Carpet—where I know that I will be able to offer my client high-quality goods at the best price.
Q: We love how your classical training in theater design shines through in your work. What are your favorite ways of incorporating this fun aspect into your interior designs?
A: Theater combines fun and drama, and as an interior designer, I love bringing those elements into my clients’ spaces. I want the spaces I create for them to evoke visual as well as emotional responses. Just as in set design, the use of color, texture, lighting, furniture placement, and architectural elements can achieve this.
Q: Every room in the house must be fun to design. Which is your favorite?
A: I believe I love the living room most, because that is where everyone gathers. It is often an introduction to the home as well as the showcase that says, “insert clients name lives here” This home represents them.
Q: With summer in full swing, what do you consider must-haves when it comes to designing the ultimate outdoor living space?
A: People love to commune with nature and each other. Comfortable seating and/or lounging, personal touches—and of course—ease of care and durability are all important when creating an outdoor space.
Q: Your use of area rugs is fabulous! What is your best tip for choosing an area rug (or rugs)?
A: Choosing the floor coverings first allows you to build a cohesive design. Your rug becomes the anchor to the room and everything else plays off of that.
Q: What are your top design tips for someone who is thinking about a home refresh?
A: I usually suggest that my clients gather pictures, lists of wants and needs, and perhaps make a Pinterest board. With thorough interviewing, I can tease out what is most important and so forth. This leads to concepts that address as many—or all, if possible—of the clients’ wishes. I also take this time to bring them concepts that they may not have thought of.
Trusting your designer and knowing that they are bringing your ideas and needs to life is also very important. It is my job to give you the best possible version of your vision. Ultimately, this results in a home that the client loves and a project for me that I am proud to put in my portfolio.
Q: Your work spans a diverse range of spaces, from commercial to residential. Where do you find the inspiration to create your vision for each type of space?
A: Commercial and residential—although two entirely different types of design—both have the same basic core. Knowing what the clients’ needs, wants and desires are. Working within a budget to achieve it, and finally giving them a space that will function and provide them with the best possible space that will be used and enjoyed for years to come.
