Q & A with Sarah Tract Interiors
Q: We absolutely love how you blend a touch of whimsy within the beauty and sophistication of your designs. Where do you find the inspiration to create this warm and inviting vibe?
A: I think the heart of my inspiration comes from storytelling. I want every space to feel like it has a soul—something that reflects the people who live there while still sparking a little joy or surprise. I’m constantly inspired by the layered charm of unique pieces, the colors and textures in nature, and even moments of nostalgia from childhood. That’s where the “whimsy” comes in—those little touches that make a room feel less “designed” and more lived-in and loved. For me, the magic happens when sophistication doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Q: Your attention to detail and keen eye for design trends shines throughout each room you curate. What is the one design trend you’re loving right now? Additionally, which trend do you think is on its way out?
A: One trend I’m absolutely loving right now is the use of rich, camel-and-caramel-drenched tones throughout a space. There’s something incredibly timeless and grounding about those warm hues. They instantly elevate a room and make it feel cozy, yet refined. I’m also really inspired by the shift toward painted walls in distinct colors for each room. It’s such a powerful way to give each space its own personality and mood. The era of all-white walls everywhere feels like it’s behind us. Clients are becoming more adventurous and open to living with color, which I’m fully embracing.
Q: A huge buzz phrase for creating joyful and uplifting spaces that’s circulating on TikTok and Pinterest these days is “Dopamine Decor.” What advice would you give for creating this soothing space?
A: I love that people are embracing the idea that their homes should make them feel something—ideally, joy! For me, “dopamine decor” isn’t about being loud or chaotic; it’s about curating a space that feels deeply personal and uplifting. Design for yourself. Choose colors that make you smile, incorporate meaningful pieces that tell your story. And don’t be afraid to mix styles or eras if it feels right. A soothing, joyful space doesn’t have to be maximalist—it just has to reflect who you are and support how you want to feel in your home every day.
Q: With summer around the corner, what are your top design tips for giving a refresh to an outdoor space?
A: For an easy summer refresh, I love switching in fun, patterned outdoor pillows to bring in color and comfort. When hosting, I keep the table relaxed but thoughtful. Layering simple linens, pretty glassware, and fresh flowers or greenery always makes it feel special without being overdone. It’s all about creating an inviting vibe where people want to linger and come back to!
Q: All of your designs are beautiful. Is there one room or space you love designing the most? Why is it your favorite?
A: I love designing powder rooms. Even though they’re small, they offer so much opportunity for creativity. From bold wall treatments and statement lighting to unique vanities and patterned floors, it’s a space where you can really go for it. I love layering unexpected elements to create something memorable. It’s the perfect place to take risks and have fun without overwhelming the rest of the home.
Q: Your passion for sourcing innovative materials is part of your signature style. What elements resonate with you to design and fabricate such beautiful custom furnishings for your clients?
A: Fabrics are one of the most exciting elements in my design process. I love sourcing materials that offer both beauty and durability. Whether it’s a luxurious velvet, a textured linen, or a performance fabric that holds up to the wear and tear of everyday life, the right fabric can completely transform a piece of furniture. I’m always on the lookout for unique textures and patterns that bring warmth and personality to a space, but I also prioritize comfort and practicality—because great design should be as functional as it is beautiful.
Q: Your unique approach to incorporating a variety of design styles is particularly impressive. What characteristics do you look for in a room or space that inspire you to bring it to life?
A: I’m always inspired by the architecture and natural light of a space. Whether it’s beautifully-detailed molding, a bold window, or even the layout, those elements often dictate how I approach the design. I also look for opportunities to mix different design styles in a way that feels cohesive—combining modern with traditional, or adding vintage pieces to a contemporary setting. I love the challenge of taking contrasting elements and finding harmony. It’s all about creating a space that feels layered, lived-in, and timeless—where every piece adds something to the overall story of the room.
Q: Entertaining is a big part of spring and summer activities. What advice would you give on refreshing a home for spring and summer fun?
A: A stylish bar cart is a must for entertaining in spring and summer! I love using it as a statement piece that also serves a functional purpose. Start with the essentials—good quality glassware, a few key bottles of liquor, and a selection of mixers. But the fun comes in with the details. Incorporate vibrant napkins, a set of elegant stirrers, and maybe a few unique cocktail ingredients. A beautiful tray underneath can help ground everything and keep it organized. I also love adding a touch of personality—like a vintage decanter or a colorful vase with fresh flowers—to bring some life and charm to the display.
