This month, we sat down with Amal to learn about the inspiring journey that led to her becoming an interior designer, her signature touch, and her passion to design the ultimate happy home for her clients. Get ready for some surprises—and inspiration.

Q: Your portfolio of interior designs is so beautiful! How did you get started in the interior design industry?

A: Creativity is definitely in my blood! From an early age, I was inspired by my mother’s artistic talents. As an artist, she gifted me with an eye for color and composition. I would accompany her to her art shows (or, dragged me to them is more like it) as well as museums. Looking back on those days, I am eternally grateful to her. The interesting part of my story is that my road to design was not a direct one. I attended law school and practiced law for a number of years until I realized that the legal world was not for me. I was enthralled with interior design. My husband encouraged me to go back to school to become a designer. It’s just something that comes naturally to me. I landed a job with Meg Braff, an interior designer who I worked with for a number of years. I decided to go out on my own and opened my own design shop in Huntington, NY.

Q: How would you describe your home design style? What is your favorite?

A: I would describe myself as a “new traditionalist.” I like my spaces to be youthful, fun, pretty and colorful. House Beautiful coined the phrase “Grand Millennial Style.” I feel like this style is close to describing my favorite design aesthetic.

Q: When designing a room, what is the most important thing you consider?

A: When it comes to designing a room, I believe there are vital elements to consider: architecture, location, function—and, of course—the client’s personality. The style and location of a home inspire many of the ideas you initially bring to your client. I like to say: “The house tells you what it wants!” Function plays an important role when choosing fabrics, carpets and finishes. It leads you to ask the question: “Who will be using the space, how often, and why?” Finally, my goal is to design a space that embodies the best version of the homeowner’s personality. I strive to make the room a reflection of the owner’s tastes and preferences!

Q: Do you have a signature touch that you use in every project?

A: Yes, I definitely have a style. I love color and mixing old with new.  There is so much inspiration in the design world that it’s easy to make each project unique and different. As far as a signature touch, I would have to say all my projects have a touch of nature in them. I believe adding a bit of greenery and plant life to a space makes rooms—and the people in them—come alive! It’s all about bringing the outdoors…in.

Q: What do you love about being an interior designer?

A: I am thrilled to help make beautiful spaces that improve the life and lifestyles of others. I think we are all in the happiness business. Your surroundings affect your mood, and making spaces beautiful and comfortable contributes to our well-being. Ultimately, I love making a happy home for each of my clients! It’s wonderful to do what you love and bring happiness to others.

Q: What are some of your biggest inspirations?

A: Inspiration is everywhere! While we are lucky to have a billion images at our fingertips, the best inspiration is experiential and sensory. Since we haven’t been able to travel as often as we would like these days, I find myself spending more time outdoors—soaking in as many sunsets and long walks as I can. Color is such an important part of what we do and who we are. Observing the incredible ways colors blend together in nature—and how light reflects color in the world around us—is the ultimate inspiration for designing our spaces.

Q: Everyone is very ready to move on from 2020. Have you found many clients reaching out to you for a 2021 home refresh?

A:  The interior design industry has experienced a major boom during the lockdown. People are home, taking a good look at their spaces, and are motivated to feather their nests. Like many of my colleagues, I am blessed to be busier than ever, working with both old and new clients. We are, however, experiencing longer than normal lead times. I am happy to partner with a company like Country Carpet. They have an incredible inventory and the ability to acquire products quickly!

Q: What design trend(s) are you most excited about using in 2021?

A: I’m seeing traditional design and antiques making a comeback. People want things that are comfortable and familiar—except with a new and colorful twist. I am happy to oblige! I am lucky to have a design store where I stock vintage, antique, and new items that I use in my jobs. I think of my store as my design lab. I am always experimenting with different things. It makes me happy to see people embracing beautiful vintage accessories and furnishings!

Q: For someone who’s starting to think of a room design refresh or complete home redesign—what advice would you have for them?

A: I have two tips to offer. First: If possible, choose the carpet! If you have a favorite wallpaper or fabric you love, that’s great. But the next big decision you should make is choosing the carpet. All your other selections will fall into place. For example, many people make the mistake of choosing paint colors first, when in fact paint colors should be the last thing you choose. Second: Avoid buying disposable furniture. It’s in your best interest to purchase fewer and better-quality pieces. They will not only last longer, but they will reduce your footprint, making you happier in the long run.
