Q: You grew up the daughter of a master furniture craftsman. How does that inform and influence your work and style as an interior designer?

A: I grew up surrounded by nice furnishings, and my father instilled in me an appreciation for craftsmanship that I still have. My father always talked about quality, and he taught me what to look for in furniture. There was a real artistry to the furniture that he taught me to appreciate, especially at that time. To this day, I still own and adore the pieces that he passed down to me.

Q: The Lewis Design Group has earned a variety of accolades and recognition for prestigious show house designs. When did this vision for opening The Lewis Design Group start for you?

A: My entire adult career has been in interior design. In these past years, I have so enjoyed taking my work to new levels with all the inspiring show house opportunities—like Kips Bay Palm Beach and Holiday House New York and Hamptons—that have come by way. It’s a dream come true.

Q: Where do you look for design inspiration?

A: Travel is my favorite source for design inspiration. I especially love Paris for those one-of-a-kind treasures. In general, I’m always mindful to be out and about, keeping up with new collections at High Point Market and in New York to see what’s new and trending. I like to think of myself as a “professional shopper”: always on the hunt for that piece that could be the jewel in the room. It’s those curated objects that are not known to everyone that make a room feel special—and that is what inspires my design.

Q: Name three things you consider must-haves for a great room/family room where people like to gather.

A: Three must-haves: ample and comfortable seating, a flexible floor plan so that you can move pieces around (depending on the gathering), and of course, a fabulous carpet. In addition, in every room there should be something that tells the story of that particular project/client. and is unique to them.

Q: If you could have a sneak peek into anyone’s house, whose would it be?

A: Billy Baldwin.

Q: Today, people are taking a more active approach in prioritizing their personal wellness (both physical and mental). How does a space and/or redesign of a space contribute or impact our overall wellness?

A: I have always been drawn to color and pattern and believe in their power to elevate one’s mood. A beautifully layered room with pattern play and bold color just makes you feel good. Happiness is the best medicine.

Q: What are your thoughts on the interior design industry and how it will evolve this year?

A: It has been evolving over the last two-and-a-half years. Ever since the pandemic, more than ever, people want their homes to serve them in many different ways—from a staycation to a workspace. I forecast that this outlook on interior design will grow stronger as the year continues. This more expansive outlook on how we live at home is good for the design industry.
