One-on-One with Lauren Held

Q: The pop of color and patterns you choose for your interior design projects are mesmerizing. How important is it to the room aesthetic?

A: I feel that the pop of color—combined with patterns—make up the most important parts of a room. Even if a room is monochromatic, just bringing in a little bit of black gives it the elevation it needs. Someone once told me: “Every room needs a little black.” As far as patterns go, for me it’s about mixing textures and patterns to really get that curated look.

Q: Do you have a signature touch that you use in every project?

A: I really try to design differently for each client. I do believe that while everything has been done, how you mix those ideas can still create something new and unique.

Q: When adding a statement piece to a room—like a unique light fixture, colorful statue, or bright piece of furniture—do you start with that piece and build around it? Is it typically a color or piece that means something to the client?

A: Yes. If a client wants to include a specific piece in a room, you must work with that first to make sure it doesn’t look out of place. When I design my spaces, I begin with carpet and wallpaper, and work up from there. To me, this sets the tone for the color that’s going to be used and makes it easier to find the right fabrics to coordinate.

Q: What are some key décor elements that can freshen up a space?

A:  Pillows, books, and accessories can be a fairly inexpensive way to freshen up a space. If you’re looking to spend a bit more, I believe window treatments can really change a room: Everyone’s eyes go to the window first.

Q: What is your favorite room in a house to design, and why?

A: I love a family room. It’s the center of the home where everyone loves to gather. It’s how I grew up. I love to maximize the seating and give the client the best entertaining space possible.

Q: What aspect of design do you think can completely transform a space?

A: Window treatments as well as carpets. There are a lot of possibilities when choosing these items. They can be like a pair of denim, the staple in your closet, or the new hottest trend. Whatever the choice, window treatments and carpets “ground” the room.

Q: What career advice would you give to a young aspiring interior designer?

A: It takes a lot of patience, a ton of creativity, and so much organization. Thanks to those who work for me, I get to do what I love: Design special spaces. And thank God for my team, because they keep everything organized.
